CANYON LAKE- MOUNTAIN SPRINGS RANCH

Canyon Lake is an unincorporated area, comprising the communities of Sattler, Startzville, Canyon City, and Hancock in Comal County, TX. 2000 estimated population at 29,000. The lake is 18 miles West of New Braunfels, the Comal County seat 23 miles WSW of San Marcos 44 miles N of San Antonio 54 miles S of Austin. The population growth of Canyon Lake has been dramatic, as expected, since the construction of the dam in the mid 60's. The US Census Bureau did not recognize Canyon Lake as a distinct community until 1980, so the initial growth was not tracked. The 42 percent growth in Comal County between 1980 and 1990 is largely due to the population increase within the Canyon Lake area. Lake area population is expected to double every 20 years. Being a short distance from New Braunfels allows Canyon Lake residents to utilize everything New Braunfels has to offer along with being a little more secluded in the Texas hill country. Smithson Valley is a part of the Comal Independent School District (ISD), serving the western portion of Comal County. As a top relocation destination, Smithson Valley is in the midst of a large-scale expansion project, which will ensure top-quality education for the new students that continue to arrive in the area. Academic standards here are high, with the majority of graduating seniors continuing their educations at the college and university levels. Even as it continues to grow, Smithson Valley maintains a close-knit community atmosphere. Extracurricular activities are vast and varied, ranging from special-interest clubs to a number of boys’ and girls’ sports teams. Parents in the district pride themselves on their high level of involvement in their children’s educational and social activities. You will find that Smithson Valley also boasts enormous turnout for sporting events and a very active Booster Club.
